I found this device connects quickly and very accurately. Battery drain is acceptable but irrelevant while I use the D700 hand grip. I used the original NIKON which was disappointingly slow. Highly recommend it.

Bought it for Nikon D90. Out of habit I inserted camera into bag with hand grip up, cable plug-in down. I bent one cable, and it came apart when I pulled the usb connector out of the camera. So I tried the second cable (I had bought 2 units), and when I pulled it out of the usb connection on the camera, it pulled apart the usb connection on the camera itself. The usb fits too tight. So I quit using it on the D90, of course. Now I'm going to use the unit on the D2x with the supplied 10 pin connection.
As for speed and lock-on, it is excellent. And it will hold and record the outside position when the camera is taken indoors. That's really a big plus in its design.
